Youth and amateur career
Hovland was born on September 18, 1997 in Oslo, Norway. He played golf at Oklahoma State University. As an amateur, Hovland has won several titles, including the 2014 Norwegian Amateur Golf Championship.
In 2018 he became the first Norwegian player to win the American Amateur Championship. Thanks to this victory, he received an invitation to the 2019 Masters Tournament, 2019 US Open and 2019 Open Championship.
