Doucey was born on October 19, 1956, in Algona, Iowa, the son of Joanne and James Edward Doucey. His paternal grandfather was of Irish descent and his maternal grandmother was of Swedish descent. Dusi attended Kansas elementary schools in Russell, Saline, and Industry. He later earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Kansas.
