Ron Dugay was born July 6, 1957, in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. He spent his childhood in Val Caron, Ontario. He has been playing ice hockey since he was little. As a young hockey player, he represented his hometown in the Ontario Hockey League and played for the Sudbury Wolves.

Ron was drafted 13th overall by the New York Rangers in the 1977 NHL Entry Draft. After being drafted in 1977, he moved straight to the NHL from junior hockey.
Duguet played for Team Canada in the 1981 Canada Cup. During this time, he had a chance to improve his game. He scored 40 goals in two years from 1981 to 82. Ron represented the New York Rangers in the NHL All-Star Game. However, from 1982 to 1983 he struggled to show his good form. In those two years, he only scored 19 goals.
On June 13, 1983, Ron was traded to the new Detroit Red Wings for Willie Huber. His performance improved along with the team as he scored 33 goals. He was also good at assists with 47 assists.
