Shamele Mackie, better known as Papoose, is an American rapper. Papoos managed to capture the attention of the hip-hop community with her participation in the Roots of Evil album. Since then, she has continued to release her own mixtapes, which has led to her signing a multi-million dollar deal with Jive Records. Early Life
Papoose grew up in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn and was of Liberian descent. He studied at Immaculata High School, from where he graduated. He was influenced by his cousin Pierre Born, who later became a platinum producer.
Papoose’s net worth and career
Papoose first became known among hip-hop fans after participating in the recording of the Roots of Evil album. He continued to hone his craft over the years, eventually releasing his first single titled Thug Connection in 2004. This earned him several offers, including from Select Records, which offered him eight albums, but to no avail.
He began to produce and even distribute his own music. He got better and better at releasing mixtapes and between 2004 and 2006 he was able to release more than 12 mixtapes. In 2005 he also received the Justo Mixtape award for best underground artist.
In 2006, his hard work began to pay off when he was able to sign a lucrative $1.5 million deal with Jive Records. This prompted him to work on his first album called The Nacirema Dream. However, Papoose’s relationship with Jive deteriorated significantly over time, and as a result, Papoose began to work independently again.
He released a total of 9 mixtapes between 2007 and 2012. He then teamed up with Fontana Distribution to release his highly anticipated album The Nacirema Dream, which fans heard in 2013 and debuted at number 97 on the US Billboard 200.
He later collaborated with Hot 97, but also had rivals such as Kendrick Lamar for whom he created a red herring in which Lamar claimed to be the king of New York. He went on to release several mixtapes, including Hoodie Season 2 and Cigar Society. Papoose will then release his second album titled You Can’t Stop Destiny.
Papoose also appeared on VH1’s Love & Hip Hop: New York when they received an offer too good to turn down. This resulted in him and his wife being on the show for several seasons. There was also a spin-off show called Remy and Papoose: Meet Maki.
Personal Life
Papoose was having an affair with Yvette Lashley, with whom he would also have two children. However, they later parted ways. Papoose later fell in love with rapper Remy Ma and they exchanged vows over the phone during a celebration in 2008.
They eventually decided to get married in 2016, which was also featured in the season six episode “Love & Hip Hop: New York.” Along with Remy, the couple have a son named Remini Mackenzie, who was born in 2018.
