Early Life
Monica was born on July 28, 1985 in Santa Cruz, California. She attended North Salinas High School until 2003, where she was part of the Vikings team that won three CIF Central Coast Section Division I titles. She was CalHi Softball Athlete of the Year and Sports Athlete of the Year. In addition, she was twice named California Salinas Sportsperson of the Year.

Abbott then enrolled at the University of Tennessee, where he played on the softball team until 2007, majoring in communications. In her freshman year, she managed to become the first American from Tennessee to be selected to the NFCA All-American First Team. The following year, she bettered her feat with 603 strikeouts, setting even more new records.
As a senior, Abbott was named the 2007 USA College Softball Player of the Year and the 2007 Honda Award winner.
