Early Life
Melvin grew up in Chicago well educated after completing his college degree. with a minor in literature from Ohio Wesleyan University. After leaving school, Melvin thought a service in the Air Force would be for the best given the situation the United States was in at the time.

Melvin served in the Air Force for almost 4 years, after which he began working as a flight attendant on a cable car. However, within himself, he was a writer and a creator. Because of this bias, Melvin wrote about his experience with Gripman in his book Big Heart.
One day while traveling, Melvin spoke with a passenger who advised him to become a director. He thought of this idea himself and knew that inside him there was someone who was interested in the art of cinema.
For this reason, Melvin decided to make his first short film, Pills for Herrick, released in 1957. After gaining experience in film, Melvin made two other short films in the same genre.
Little by little, he understood what the industry was and how to best position himself for success, which led him to move to Hollywood, where his goal was to find a job as a director. However, this plan did not work as he expected.

However, it was an opportunity for Melvin as the connection led him to work on a new short film made in France called Les Cinq Cent Balles. In addition, he got more work as a writer in France and also started writing for France Observateur.
The film received critical acclaim for addressing the then widespread problem of racism in the United States. She then worked on a movie called Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song which was released in 1971 and which she made with her own savings and a $50,000 loan.
Melvin took a huge risk, but it paid off as the film grossed over $10 million. It was huge at the time and allowed Melvin to establish himself as a seasoned director.

Melvin was married to Maria Marks. For some time in his life he lived in Mexico, where his son Mario Van Peebles was born, who followed in his father’s footsteps and became a director himself. However, Melvin and Maria’s marriage did not last long, so they decided to divorce.
Melvin Van Peebles, 89, died on September 21, 2021, at his home in Manhattan. He is survived by his son Mario.
