Matt Barnes was born on March 9, 1980 in Santa Clara, California, United States. His father is African American and his mother is white. For studies he attended Camp High School, where he actively played soccer and basketball. He later attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). There he played four seasons in college basketball.

Barnes was selected by the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2002 NBA draft. However, he did not stay with the team for long as he was immediately traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
