Early years and amateur career

Mark Eaton was born on January 24, 1957 in Inglewood, California, United States. He spent his childhood in southern California. Eaton was more interested in water polo. For his education, he attended Westminster High School. He then enrolled at the Arizona Automotive Institute, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in maintenance.

Mark previously worked as a car mechanic. In fact, he spent three years working as an auto mechanic until he was discovered by assistant basketball coach Tom Lubin. Tom found Eaton doing car repairs in Anaheim. He encouraged him to try his hand at basketball. Tom also helped him get into community college.

Eton showed great performance as a college player. In two seasons he averaged 14.3 points in each game. He also led his school to victory over the California state title.
