Lloyd Austin was born on August 8, 1953 in Mobile, Alabama, United States. He grew up in Thomasville, Georgia. Lloyd graduated with a bachelor’s degree in natural sciences from the United States Military Academy. He later attended Auburn University and earned a master’s degree in consulting.

In 1989 he received an MBA from Webster University. Lloyd then took basic and advanced courses for infantry officers at the Army War College and the Army Command and General Staff College.
