John Gruden was born on August 17, 1963 in Sandusky, Ohio, United States. He grew up a fan of the Cleveland Browns. His father, Jim Gruden, was also involved in football. Jim worked as a regional professional football scout, hiring manager, and quarterbacks coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He has two brothers. One of his brothers named Jay played and coached in the Arena Football League.

Regarding his education, he attended Clay High School. After graduating from high school in 1982, she enrolled at Muskingum College. There she studied for a year and then transferred to the University of Dayton. Gruden graduated from the University of Dayton with a bachelor’s degree in communications in 1986.

In January 1992, he was named an assistant coach/special offensive catcher for the Green Bay Packers.
