John Bel Edwards (born September 16, 1966) is an American politician and attorney who has been the 56th Governor of Louisiana since 2016. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served two terms as the Democratic Speaker of the Louisiana House of Representatives. Edwards was elected to the Louisiana House in 2011.

Edwards was appointed Louisiana medical director, Dr. J. Joseph Kanter, to discuss concerns about the Omicron variant. Edwards and Kanter confirmed that this variant has not yet been found in the state, but noted that that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not here.

He defeated Republican Senator David Vitter in the 2015 gubernatorial runoff election. Edwards was born on September 16, 1966, in East Baton Rouge County, Louisiana.

He was raised in Amita, Louisiana, the son of Dora Jean (née Miller) and Tangipahoa County Sheriff Frank M. Edwards, Jr., a member of Louisiana Governor Edwin Edwards’ administration (relationships unknown).
Based on his education, Edwards graduated from Amit High School in 1984 at the top of his class.
In 1988, Edwards earned an engineering degree from the United States Military Academy, where he was on the dean’s list and served as vice chair of the committee that enforced the West Point Honor Code.

Edwards graduated from Airborne School in 1986 while at West Point.
After receiving his commission, he completed the Basic Infantry Officer Course at Fort Benning (1988), Ranger School (1989), and the Advanced Infantry Officer Course (1992).
Edwards served in the Army for eight years, primarily with the 25th Infantry Division and 82nd Airborne Division, including as a company commander with the 82nd Brigade, 3rd Brigade, 505th Airborne Regiment Parachute Infantry.

He finished his military career to return to Louisiana for family reasons.
Edwards received his Juris Doctorate from the Louisiana State University Paul M. Hebert Law Center in 1999 and practiced at the law firm of Edwards & Associates in Amita.
As an attorney, Edwards has handled many cases, although he has not practiced criminal law due to his brother’s local sheriff’s status.

Edwards ran for the Louisiana House of Representatives in 2007.
He was forced to stand in the second round of the general election along with fellow attorney George Tucker.
He was re-elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives after defeating his opponent Johnny Duncan 83% to 17% in 2011.

In the runoff on November 21, 2015, Edwards won the election with 56.1% of the vote.
Edwards signed the Medicaid expansion into law in 2016.
In 2016, he signed an executive order to protect lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people from harassment or termination.

In 2017, Edwards promised that he would be able to work with the new administration of Donald Trump.
