John Bel Edwards (born September 16, 1966) is an American politician and attorney who has been the 56th Governor of Louisiana since 2016. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served two terms as the Democratic Speaker of the Louisiana House of Representatives. Edwards was elected to the Louisiana House in 2011.
Edwards was appointed Louisiana medical director, Dr. J. Joseph Kanter, to discuss concerns about the Omicron variant. Edwards and Kanter confirmed that this variant has not yet been found in the state, but noted that that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not here.
He defeated Republican Senator David Vitter in the 2015 gubernatorial runoff election. Edwards won a second term in the 2019 election and became the state’s first re-elected Democratic governor since 1975. He is an Army veteran. in the 82nd Airborne Division of the Air Force and rose to the rank of Captain.
