Early years and playing career

Jim Fassel was born on August 31, 1949 in Anaheim, California. He attended high school in Anaheim and then Fullerton College, where he played football as a quarterback.

Fussel was selected in the seventh round by the Chicago Bears in the 1972 NFL Draft. As a player, Fussel has played for teams such as the Chicago Bears, San Diego Chargers, Houston Oilers, Toronto Argonauts and “Hawaiians”.

Fassel began his coaching career in 1974 with the Hawaiians of the World Football League. In 1976, he began his college training as a quarterback and wide receivers coach at the University of Utah. He also briefly worked at Weber State University and Stanford University.

In 1991 he joined the New York Giants as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach. A year later he moved to the Denver Broncos, where he worked for two years as offensive coordinator. He was also an assistant manager for the Arizona Cardinals and the Oakland Raiders.

Fassel was hired by the New York Giants again in 1997, this time as head coach. During his tenure, his teams were known for strong draws and significant wins. In 1997 he was named the NFL Coach of the Year. In the 2000 season, Fassel led the Giants to the NFC championship.

In 2003 he left the New York Giants and joined the Baltimore Ravens as an offensive consultant. A year later, he became the offensive coordinator. His time with the Ravens drew criticism from several players because the Ravens were bottom of the league on offense. On October 17, 2006, he was fired from his position as coordinator of the Ravens’ offensive line.

In 2009 he was named head coach of the Las Vegas Locomotives of the United Football League. He helped the team win the UFL championship in 2009 and 2010.

Personal Life

As for his personal life, he was married to Kitty. They married in 1971 and divorced in 2006 after years of consultation. However, they later reconciled and remarried. Jim’s son, John Fassel, is also a coach and coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys. Jim and Kitty had four other children.

On June 7, 2021, Fassel died in Las Vegas, Nevada at the age of 71 from complications of a heart attack.
