Early Life
Ray’s birth name was given to her as a combination of her grandmothers’ names, Joyce and Isseu. Her family is from Senegal and she spent a small part of her childhood there. However, most of them moved to the United States, where they grew up in an affluent area of Maryland, where Rae later mentioned how difficult it was to adjust.
She attended the King Drew Magnet High School of Medicine and Science around the time Ray started acting. Later, after graduating from university, Ray entered Stanford University, where she received a degree in African and African American studies.
While in college, Ray was very active in creating various plays as well as music videos. In addition, she even created a reality show called Dorm Diaries. After completing her studies, Ray was able to get an acting scholarship at the Public Theater, which launched her career as an actress and producer.

Ray fueled her through a web series she created called Awkward Black Girl, which she began posting on YouTube in 2011. In the show, she was introduced by the main character named Jay. This web series has become a huge hit on the internet. However, due to lack of funding, they were unable to complete the remainder of the first season.
Then Ray and her producer Tracey Oliver raised funds through Kickstarter and managed to raise about $56,000, which helped them finish the series. The success of the show led to her winning the Shorty Award for Best Web Show and opened up huge opportunities for her career.
