Early life

Gabby Thomas was born on December 7, 1996 in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. Her parents are Desmond Thomas and Jennifer Randall. Her mother is African American and her father is Jamaican. Gabby’s mother, Randall, moved to Massachusetts in 2007 to become a professor at the University of Massachusetts. After some time, her family settled permanently in Florence, Massachusetts.

Thomas was initially interested in soccer and softball. He then became interested in athletics. Gabby said that track and field athlete Allison Felix inspired her to participate in her race. Thomas first saw Allison Felix on television when he was visiting her grandmother. He brought his passion for athletics to high school and ran for 4 years at Williston Northampton School. Every year she was recognized as MVP and set many records in school competitions.

Thomas competed in all six different meets in his three years of athletics while at Harvard. He has won 22 conference titles. He also set Ivy League records in the 100, 200 and 60 meters indoors. He soon signed a contract with the sports brand New Balance.

Thomas turned pro in October 2018 and moved to Austin, Texas where he was trained by Tonya Buford Bailey. Thomas was suspended in May 2020 after three whereabouts violations.
