Youth and amateur career
Verdejo was born on May 19, 1993 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Demetrio Verdejo Colón and Madeleine Sanchez. As an amateur, he won the 2012 US Olympics boxing qualifying tournament as a lightweight.
At the 2012 Summer Olympics, Verdejo defeated José Huertas in the first round with a score of 115. He then won against Ahmed Mezhri with a score of 167. But he lost to Lomachenko in the quarterfinals with a score of 149.

Verdejo’s first fight as a professional boxer was against Leonardo Chavez in 2012, where he won the bout by unanimous decision. He won his first title against the Mexican Marco Antonio López. Vardejo won the vacant WBO Latino lightweight title via fifth-round TKO.
On June 13, 2015, he defended the title for the first time against Iván Nájera. He scored two knockdowns and won the fight in the tenth round. Verdejo went on to defend his title against Josenilson dos Santos, William Silva, José Luis Rodríguez, Juan José Martínez and Oliver Flores.

On April 30, 2021, police were investigating Verdejo for a missing woman named Keishla Rodríguez. Her family revealed that Keishla was pregnant with Verdejo’s baby. On May 2, 2021, she turned herself in after authorities ruled that she was found dead. Verdejo is charged with fatal kidnapping, fatal carjacking and murder of an unborn child.
