Edwards was born on August 7, 1927, in Avoyel Parish, Louisiana. In his youth he dreamed of being a preacher and also preached in the Church of the Nazarene. He also served in World War II for the United States. Army Air Corps. Upon his return from the Army, Edwards graduated from Louisiana State University Law Center, after which he began his law career.
