Early life
Chris Collinsworth was born on January 27, 1959 in Dayton, Ohio, United States. He was born to his parents, Abraham Lincoln “Abe” and Donetta Browning Collinsworth. Both of his parents were teachers. He has a younger brother named Greg. He attended Astronaut High School with his brother Greg, where his father was the principal.
In high school, Chris was active in various sports. He was a key member of the Astronaut War Eagles. In 1976, Chris won the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) state championship in the 100-yard class 3A. In high school he was also an American quarterback.
Collinsworth then attended the University of Florida, where he received a track scholarship from varsity coach Doug Dickey. He was named wide receiver after the Florida team struggled to score in his first season in 1977. Chris played very well in his new role. Chris was named to the AllSoutheast Conference (SEC) First Team for three years in 1978, 1979 and 1980.
Chris had a great time playing for Florida. He caught 120 passes for 1,937 yards and 14 touchdowns. Likewise, he responded with 30 kickoffs for 726 yards, averaging 24.2 yards per return. He graduated with a Bachelor of Accounting from the University of Florida in 1981.

As a rookie, he only made 67 receivers, the most of any rookie receiver in the NFL. In 1985, Chris signed with the Tampa Bay Bandits. However, his contract was terminated after he was unable to complete the physical requirements due to an ankle injury.
