Early life
Ben Crump was born on October 10, 1969 in Lumberton, North Carolina, in the United States. He grew up in a large extended family with 9 siblings and half siblings. Ben was cared for by his grandmother, as his mother, Helen, worked as a hotel maid. He also worked at the local Converse shoe factory.
Ben attended South Plantation High School in Plantation, Florida. He then enrolled at Florida State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice in 1992. After three years, he earned his law degree in 1995.

Crump’s first case dates back to 2002, when he represented the family of Jeanie McMeans Jr., who was shot to death by a white soldier. In 2007, he faced another case involving an African-American teenager named Martin Lee Anderson, who was killed by guards at a Florida juvenile detention center in 2006.
Ben made headlines in 2012 after representing the family of Trayvon Martin, who was shot and killed by 28-year-old George Zimmerman on February 26, 2012, in Sanford, Florida. In the same year he faced the case of Alecia Thomas, an African-American woman who was dying in police custody.
Thomas was severely beaten by police officer Mary O’Callaghan, which was the primary cause of his death. Crump replaced George Floyd, who was killed by Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin. The officer was eventually charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. He was subsequently charged with second degree murder.
His most recent case includes that of Christian Hall, a 19-year-old Asian-American. He was shot to death by Pennsylvania State Troopers in December 2020. He also represented the family of Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old African-American boy who was killed by a police officer in downtown Brooklyn.
